You may have heard that Don Imus got nicked again for uttering a racist comment.
During the show, conversation turned to a story about how suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones now wants to drop his well-known nickname. In the course of the segment, Imus is told that Jones has “been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005.”Imus asks: “What color is he?”
“He’s African-American,” the host is informed by one of his on-air sidekicks.
“Well, there you go,” Imus said. “Now we know.”
My first comment is that its ridiculous that this is news--no not ridiculous--damn scary.
There is not a lick of difference between Iran's religious police whacking women who aren't sufficiently modestly attired and the "liberal" police insuring that people in this country express their racism in the right way.
Yeah, you read it right.
Imus' comment was definitely racist, but so was the clarification of his intent. One gets you the pogrom, the other is acceptable--the socially acceptable orthodox racism.
For a concept so prevalent in our society's cultural and political history, people are remarkably oblivious about what racism really is. To express it succinctly--all Indians walk single file, at least the one I saw did.
Generalizing about individuals with common characteristics is a natural thing--probably inherent to our species. Every time you hear a blond joke you are being exposed to the generalizing reflex. That one's harmless right?
Not to blonds.
Truly enlightened people will resist this impulse to generalize at all turns, but liberal-left Democrats have rather cynically decided to exploit racism for political gain, fostering racist notions against whitey. Imus has learned the lesson--you can still be racist, but you must channel the racism into approved forms. It is no less damaging to assert the generalization that an arrest of a black man is simply a case of the unapproved racism at work, but that works politically for the Democrats--maintaining the isolation of the black community and its block voting habits.
Its a monstrosity and someday history will judge it so. What I find really chilling is that Barack Obama is clearly one of those cynical exploiters or racism for political gain. That is the true horror of his 20 year association with Trinity United--he kept the monster as a pet.
