You might think that 50 year old men having sex with 14 year old girls would literally define the term "indefensible", but where the left's ambitions are concerned, no perversion is beyond redemption.
Texas is arguing that statutory rape is a way of life for many of Warren Jeffs' followers. But this isn't just about sexual abuse. There is a whiff of cultural imperialism here. This is about further marginalizing an already-marginalized way of life - one person's religion, another's cult. Texas is taking on polygamy itself, FLDS polygamy specifically - its pervasive oppression of women, all-powerful patriarchy and molding of children's minds.
The Rangers didn't round up just the potential victims of sexual abuse (12- to 18-year-old girls). They didn't stop at criminal behavior. With reluctant and sometimes subversive victims, Texas child advocates have shown no consideration for different family groups, distinct styles of discipline or actual proof of specific abuse. Paternity testing will clear up some but not all of those questions.
That's the other shoe dropping--the left is attempting to muddy the waters on the FLDS because of the implications for alternative lifestyles.
In a 1984 review, Finkelhor5 estimated that 3% to 4.8% of males in the United States had a history of prepubertal sexual contact with an adult male. Perpetrators tended to be unrelated acquaintances or strangers, and victims tended to have families of origin that were poor, physically abusive, and only 1 parent.
Where do the kids meet these unrelated, strange men? Their parent introduces them.
If the state can use the rape of children as an excuse for imperial action, a lot of faithful Democrat voters could find themselves in a world of hurt. Watch this one carefully--my bet is that the left's political interests are easily worth preserving a culture of statutory rape.
I case you find yourself getting dazzled by the rhetorical flourishes, just repeat three times---50 year old men having sex with 14 year old girls...
