When KSL aired a story yesterday of a massive immigration raid at Swift and Company meat processing plants in Utah and five other states you would think the news station might have referred to some of their earlier stories on identity theft, such as this one.
Instead, what we received were mostly sympathetic images of people “who only want to work” being hauled off by immigration officials. There were several cuts of illegal immigrant advocates but none of Anthony Cereni who “couldn't even pay his taxes, because the IRS said they'd already been paid. That's how completely someone stole his identity”. Anthony’s identity was stolen by an illegal immigrant.
As someone who has had a bank account cleaned out because of identify theft, I’m somewhat cognizant of the troubles caused by people stealing social security numbers and other personnel information.
I’m not unsympathetic to the plight of those trying to come to America to seek a better life. Nor am I ignorant of the need for workers in a booming economy. But what makes this country work, in contrast to most countries supplying us with illegal immigrants, is the rule of law. Allowing massive ILLEGAL immigration takes us down the path of lawlessness that generated the economiic problems for illegal immigrants in their home countries.
UPDATE 12/14/06: Someone at KSL must have been feeling the heat from their one-sided broadcast. Tonight they had a segment relating the immigration raid to ID theft.
