Its rather amusing to see the media contemplate the "failure" of Mission Impossible III after it made "only" 48 million in the opening weekend.
Just a few months ago, the media found every possible way to spin Brokeback Mountain's meager revenues as a triumph of homosexual chic "catching on" with the general public.

Not really the same story though. The question with Brokeback was whether mainstream audiences would attend, and they did.
MI III is more complex. In the event it opened below expectations, which it did:
1. How much is attributable to the general Hollywood slowdown?
2. How much is it due to the old franchise?
3. How much is due to the lengthy gap between sequels?
4. How much is due to public exhaustion with Tom Cruise's kookiness?
I'm betting on number 4. Cruise has been Hollywood's ultimate golden boy in terms of bankability, but he's been such a visible whack job of late... I've seen many in the blogosphere actively lobbying against the film.
I haven't seen it myself, probably won't. Maybe when it's released to video.
